Energy efficiency in Latin America, the missing piece
Energy efficiency measures are low hanging fruits to achieve more sustainable energy systems. Still, the topic is not very high on the political agenda in Latin America. A new study compares progress made by the countries in the region and names best practices. Sandra Guzman summarizes the findings. In Latin America, energy efficiency is still not being fully implemented. A study by the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC) from 2012 looked at the different policies in 27 countries of the region and showed that they had, in fact, taken some energy efficiency action in the past 15 years. According to the study, countries such as Uruguay, Venezuela, Panama, Peru, Mexico, Brazil and Costa Rica have already set national legal frameworks to regulate and promote energy efficiency.
